Zach Snyder US 2009
The cinematic version of Alan Moore’s graphic novel presents a tableau of images designed to dazzle. It is set in an alternate 1985 in which the U.S. won the Vietnam War and Richard Nixon keeps getting re-elected. When one retired super-hero, The Comedian, is murdered, a masked vigilante, Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley) sets out to discover why. What he uncovers is a doozy of a plot to wipe out all past and present superheroes. He reconnects with his former crime-fighting pals - Nite Owl, Silk Spectre, Ozymandias and Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup) who gives new meaning to the term “Big Blue”. What they eventually uncover is a disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Haley gives a knock-out performance as the neurotic Rorschach and the film’s soundtrack (featuring Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Nina Simone, among others) sizzles. (162m)
